EXPLORE THE TRACES OF THE ICE AGE IN SAIMAA GEOPARK
The Salpalinja Hovi is located on the Salpalinja, a defensive fortification built during the Second World War, from which the hotel takes its name.
The Salpalinja is about 1200 kilometres long and consists of reinforced concrete coffins, armoured trenches and pits, battle and compound graves and 25 large crew caves. It is the largest single construction project of the Finnish state.
The most heavily fortified part of the Salpalinja is at the watershed of the Vuoksi and Kymijoki rivers at Rutola, which would have been the only point from which the Soviet army could have reached the Finnish interior and Mikkeli headquarters without crossing the waterway. For this reason, two large crew caves are located on the Rutola watershed and can only be visited with a knowledgeable guide.
The adjacent reinforced concrete coffins and field fortifications with their guide boards can be visited free of charge.
Guided tours of the Salpalinja, including the large crew caves, can be booked at the Salpalinja Court on +358 50 336 0986 (also in English).
